The current situation in Crimea can be summed up by saying that Crimea has been illegally declared an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation, a status not recognized by the international community, which considers it an occupation or annexation. The Crimean Tatars boycotted the 2014 referendum in Crimea and supported Ukraine’s pro-European reforms, and now find themselves in a situation where their human rights are any longer not fully protected.
